Showcasing Impactful Community-Focused Research Projects

Showcasing Impactful Community-Focused Research Projects

At the SCL Agency, we’re committed to ensuring that research doesn't stay behind closed doors. We believe that research should be accessible, actionable, and relevant to the communities and stakeholders it aims to serve. Below, we share some highlights from our publicly available work, developed with and for community members, creatives, and decision makers, showcasing our collaborative journey towards health equity, community power, and participatory storytelling.

Examining the link between money and community power in Big Local Communities

Using participatory methods like River of Life, Ripple Effect Mapping, and stakeholder interviews, we explored how financial resources can empower communities. Our findings revealed a complex interplay of factors at personal, organisational, and societal levels that contribute to community power. See the executive summary here, or the full report here.

Expanding the Role of Storytelling to Tackle Health Inequalities – ReCITE, Liverpool

As part of our mission to reduce health inequalities, we conducted a literature review to explore how storytelling can shape health research and contribute to greater equity. Our findings have helped to refine the research focus, underpinning the role of narrative in amplifying community voices and promoting systemic change.

We provided tailored training to community members, health system actors, and creatives, equipping them with participatory research skills to capture local experiences and jointly analyse findings. This training has empowered community stakeholders to take a lead in research processes, fostering a sense of ownership and ensuring outcomes reflect community priorities. See the short multi-media report here.

Supporting the REDRESS Programme

Through our partnership with the REDRESS programme, we focused on bridging research findings with real-world impact, making insights accessible and engaging for diverse audiences.

  • Written and Video Case Studies: Our in-depth case studies bring the REDRESS process and findings to life, combining clear writing and engaging video storytelling to ensure findings are easily understood and widely accessible. See an example here.

  • Policy Brief: Developed from evidence gathered across the REDRESS programme, this brief equips policymakers with actionable insights to make informed, equity-focused decisions. Visit one of our policy brief documents here.

  • Interactive Multimedia Report: A digital report that goes beyond text, incorporating multimedia elements that invite users to explore REDRESS findings in an engaging and interactive way. See all the resources complied into a multi-media report to allow each viewer to access the information they want in a way that suits them (written, audio or visual) here.

  • Podcast Episodes: Our episodes feature global healthcare experts sharing practical insights and real stories to advance health equity. Here’s a link to the REDRESS episode or search for Connecting Citizens to Science wherever you get your podcasts for conversations on the latest debates in global health.

Visual Storytelling – the LIGHT Consortium

For a TB research programme, we produced an explainer video that translates research aims into accessible visuals, supporting a wider understanding of the project’s goals and outcomes. Watch the video here.

Through this work, we aim to demonstrate that research can be both rigorous and accessible, fostering genuine engagement and enabling communities to drive change. These projects reflect our commitment to impactful, collaborative research that puts people at the centre.
